NIEUW WAPEN TEGEN LEGIONELLA BN/DESTEM VRIJDAG
Netherlands, July 23, 2004 - Sporting complex De Eenhoorn has installed, as a first in the Netherlands, a state-of-the-art [LIQUITECH¨ copper/silver ionization] system for Legionella control. [The computerized system was installed at the point of entry of the facility's hot and cold water systems.] This was done with authorization of the ministry of VROM. They monitor the results very closely. The city of Sluis is also closely involved with the experiment.
The first analyses show an astonishing result. Where normally a small but persistent Legionella contamination remained, the Sports complex now was completely Legionella free. The counts were beneath detectable limits. Despite the effort of hundreds of sports centers in Zeeland to get rid of Legionella for the past years (e.g., mandatory risk assessments in control plans), contaminations still recurred and thermal eradication did not prove to be efficient. Meanwhile in surrounding countries good results were made with advanced techniques. In Holland they were not allowed by law. Now De Eenhoorn has received the first test system in a sports center approved by CTB.
Owner Frans Lievens, "the system is based on controlled dosing of copper and silver ions. The concentrations stay well below the maximum levels. The ions kill bacteria and viruses, among which Legionella. It's an age old principle; the Romans already used copper and silver coins to keep their water fresher longer. The installation from Hatenboer-Water cost Eenhoorn 20.000 Euro, including installation. The city Sluis pays half of that amount. The system proves to be cheap and maintenance free."
